The 1st Special Knowledge Building Seminar in Moscow 20 - 27.9.2009

Russian politics today: Myths, Realities, Practices

The 1st Special Knowledge Building Seminar was held in Moscow on 20-27 September 2009. Organized jointly by ICEUR, the Faculty of History, Political Science and Law at the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU, Moscow) and the Foundation for Effective Politics (FEP, Moscow), this event had the objective to provide participants with first-hand knowledge and insights into how Russian politics is made and how it is orchestrated. The highlights of the program were:

- A round table with leading Russian Public Relations specialists, experts in political communication, members of the Social Chamber as well as political scientists under the heading “D.A. Medvedev`s smart politics: cadres for the apparatus or enlightenment for society?” The contributions fleshed out the role of information and communication management in contemporary Russian politics. Issues such as political education and “spinning” as a component of political campaigns were discussed. This unit was presided by the top pundit and political advisor Gleb Pavlovskii. His team included experts such as sociologist Olga Kryshtanovskaia, the general editor of the site “Kremlin.org” Pavel Danilin, the members of the Social Chamber Yosif Diskin and Aleksei Chadaev as well as the Dean of the Department of History, Political Science and Law of the Russian Humanities State University (RGGU), Aleksander Logunov etc.

- A visit to the State Duma of the Russian Federation, where the participants were received and briefed by the chairpersons of all parliamentary fractions.

- A lecture by the well-known reform economist and liberal politician Grigorii Yavlinskii on economic reasoning in Russia, its political context and the impact of the global financial crisis. The speaker came out for closer cooperation with the European Union, which, in his view, has the potential to set off the dominance of the US and the coming superpower, China.

- A visit to the headquarters of the TV Channel “Ren TV”. Ren TV is the last remaining independent TV channel in Russia which has a track record of investigative journalism. Journalists reported on the nitty-gritty of their daily work and the obstacles they face.

Among the participants were students and graduates from Austrian universities who were joined by representatives of the EU Delegation in Russia and the Minister Plenipotentiary of the Austrian Embassy in Moscow.

The cultural program, a visit to the historical Moscow city center (Kremlin, Kolomenskoe) was of exceptional academic quality. The tour guides were university professors who made this trip an event full of surprises and discoveries, even for long-standing Muscovites. ICEUR is grateful for this great opportunity and also wants to extend special thanks to all those who contributed to organize and to realize this unique seminar. Drawing on the experience of this first experimental run, we would like to invite interested audiences from politics, business and science to sign up for the next special knowledge building seminar to be held in August 2010 in Moscow.
